Prison Monologues in première
On 23 February the theatre play ‘Gevangenis Mologen’ Prison Monologues 3 premiered in front of a full house in the NDSM Theater in Amsterdam. The play is produced by Ideefix Film & Media and François Pieneman and Daniel Krikke are the producers of the performance.
This is the debut of François as a theatre producer.
Prison Monologues 3 shows how exclusion can be the basis of a life in crime. About the process of crime, conviction, imprisonment and the return to society. About the fragility of a human life balancing between good and evil. This year the artistic team, led by director Kasper Kapteijn and writer Christine Otten, tells the true story of Mohammed T. The leading roles are played by a top cast: Mike Libanon, Patrick Ribeiro and Susan Malaika Bailey.
Thousands of prisoners are released every year, many lurking back into old behavior patterns. Somali Mohammed T. (29), who spent 4.5 years of his life in prison, is still confronted with his inner demons. As a child of Somali refugees, Mohamed grows up as one of the few ‘immigrants’ in a white environment. From an early age, he notices that he ‘doesn’t belong’; at school, a teacher bullies him because of his origin and he sometimes does not understand the cultural codes of our country. At the age of 18, he is arrested for a serious crime and sentenced to prison. This is a period in which Mohamed becomes increasingly distant from society and himself. Once outside, Mohamed quickly falls back into crime until something extraordinary happens in his life and he comes to an important insight…
Mo’s story shows how exclusion on the basis of origin, skin color and religion can form the basis of a life in crime and outside the ‘establishment’. Director Kasper Kapteijn: Prison Monologues lets you look in the mirror: Do we actually all have ‘equal opportunities?’ How do we treat each other? And aren’t we much more alike than we think? Above all, this exciting and layered performance offers plenty of food for thought. The ‘real’ Mohamed will be present at the performance and participate in the discussion with the audience.
Gevangenis Monologen 3 is the final edition of Prison Monologues with 24 shows in the NDSM-Theater. The play will run until April 15. Tickets are available via www.gevangenismonologen.nl
