THE YOUTH ARTS & SKILLS PROGRAM
Where Art,Community, and Social Impact comes together
What is it?
The Youth Arts & Skills Program is a hands-on initiative designed to empower young people from Clarens, Kgubetswana township and surrounding areas. Through practical training, creative workshops, and entrepreneurship coaching, participants gain real-world experience and the confidence to shape their own futures. Their achievements are showcased during the festival, giving them visibility and pride.
Each year, the Youth Arts & Skills Program recruits a new cohort of unemployed young people from
Clarens and the surrounding area through an open and inclusive application process. The program places a strong focus on young women and actively includes people with disabilities, working closely with local schools, community leaders and trusted local organisations, including our partner the NationalCouncil of and for Persons with Disabilities.
Why is it important?
Clarens, and the Free State more broadly, is facing a deep and urgent youth unemployment crisis. Across South
Africa, 58.5% of young people aged 15–24 are currently without work. In rural regions like the Free State, the
impact is even more severe. The lack of opportunity leads to poverty, inequality, school dropout, and increased
exposure to alcohol abuse, substance use and violence.
For many young people, the only perceived option is to leave their home communities in search of work in large
cities such as Johannesburg, often without a support network or realistic prospects. This ongoing youth exodus
drains rural towns of talent, energy and future leadership, leaving families and communities behind and
weakening local economies.
How can you support?
To launch the Youth Arts & Skills Program, we require an initial starting capital of at least €10,000,-. This seed funding enables us to launch recruitment, training and coordination for the first cohort ofyoung participants taking part in the Clarens Festival of Lights. It is allocated to concrete start-up costs including mentor and trainer fees, training materials and tools, practical workshops, coordination and supervision, accessibility and inclusion measures (such as transport support and accommodations), and basic participant support during the training and festival period. The budget is intentionally kept low because the program builds on existing local infrastructure, strong community partnerships, and in-kind contributions from trainers, mentors and festival partners. This initial investment is designed as a catalyst, not as a one-off solution.
